After months sitting dormant, your hot tub does not simply pick up where it left off. Plumbing lines that were purged and treated with antifreeze need to be flushed. Seals and gaskets that sat dry need to be inspected for cracking. And the fresh fill water requires a precise chemical balance sequence before you can safely soak.

Spring opening done correctly takes one careful day across two sessions — a few hours of active work. Done carelessly, it costs you weeks of cloudy water, equipment surprises, and a service call you could have avoided.

This guide covers every step: the full inspection, the pipe purge (the step most guides skip), first-fill water chemistry in the correct order, and the most common spring opening mistakes. Whether your hot tub was fully winterized or ran all winter, the same principles apply.

Before You Open: Timing and What to Have Ready

Timing: Open your hot tub when nighttime temperatures in your area consistently stay above 40°F (4°C). Opening too early risks catching a late cold snap and undoing your winterization work. There is no penalty for waiting — a properly winterized tub can sit closed indefinitely.

Gather these before you start:

  • Pipe purge product (Ahh-Some or Natural Chemistry Spa Purge)
  • Garden hose pre-filter (optional, highly recommended for hard or iron-rich water)
  • Complete test kit — liquid reagent kit (Taylor K-2006) for accurate spring readings
  • pH increaser (sodium carbonate) and pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate)
  • Total alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate)
  • Calcium hardness increaser (calcium chloride) — check your fill water hardness first
  • Chlorine granules (dichlor) or bromine starter kit
  • Non-chlorine oxidizer (MPS) for the first shock

Having everything on hand before you start means you can complete balancing the same day you fill — do not leave fresh water sitting unbalanced overnight.

Step 1: Inspect the Cover

Your hot tub cover took six months of snow, rain, UV, and temperature swings. Before you even open it, check:

  • Sagging or water pockets: Lift each corner. A cover that feels unusually heavy has absorbed water into the foam core — waterlogged foam insulates poorly and becomes a mold culture. A cover weighing 50+ lbs instead of its original 25–30 lbs needs replacement.
  • Skin tears or cracks: The vinyl outer skin protects the foam from moisture. Small tears can be repaired with marine vinyl adhesive. Large tears mean the foam is already saturated.

  • Walk the interior slowly, looking for cracks, spiderweb crazing, or delamination of the acrylic layer
  • Pay special attention to jet fittings — the fitting-to-shell seal is a freeze-damage hot spot
  • Check the waterline band for mineral deposits or staining — this is normal and cleans up, but brown or orange staining hints at iron in your source water
  • Press along the shell near jet bodies: any flex or soft spots indicate the fiberglass backing has separated

Jets:

  • Spin each jet body manually — they should rotate smoothly and resist jamming
  • Check for cracked jet faces, missing clips, or jets that pull out of the fitting (indicates the retaining clip snapped in the freeze)
  • Any jet that spins freely without resistance has lost its retaining ring and will allow water bypass

Equipment compartment: Open the access panel (usually at the foot end or side panel) and inspect with a flashlight:

  • Plumbing fittings: Look for cracks, especially at union connections and elbow joints — these are the highest-stress points during freezing
  • Pump housing: Cracks in the volute or wet end are a sign of freeze damage. A hairline crack in the clear pump housing is visible under flashlight
  • Heater assembly: Look for mineral deposits on the heater element end caps, cracks in the heater tube, or corroded terminals

Step 3: Reconnect Electrical and Replace Filters

Electrical reconnection: If you disconnected GFCI breakers, bonding wires, or equipment plugs during winterization:

  • Reconnect all equipment connections before restoring power
  • Check that the GFCI breaker resets cleanly — a GFCI that trips immediately on reset indicates a fault in the wiring or a component with moisture ingress
  • Restore power and confirm the control panel boots up before proceeding

Filter reinstallation: Replace the filter you stored indoors during winter with a cleaned or new cartridge. Step 4: Pipe Purge Before You Fill (Do Not Skip This Step)

This is the step most spring opening guides omit, and skipping it creates a problem you cannot solve with chemistry alone.

Even in a properly winterized hot tub, residual biofilm persists in the plumbing. Biofilm — the thin polysaccharide matrix produced by bacteria — adheres to pipe walls and jet fittings and survives both antifreeze treatment and months of dryness. When you fill and heat fresh water, that biofilm reconstitutes and sheds into the new water, causing persistent cloudiness, sanitizer demand that seems impossible to satisfy, and odors that chemistry cannot fix.

How to do a spring pipe purge:

  1. Add approximately 1–2 inches of water to the tub — enough to cover the jets and allow the pump to prime
  2. Add a pipe purge product (Ahh-Some, 1 tablespoon per 100 gallons; Natural Chemistry Spa Purge, per label) directly into the water
  3. Turn on all jets at full pressure for 20–30 minutes
  4. You will likely see brown or grey foam and debris — this is the biofilm being purged from the lines
  5. After 30 minutes, drain immediately; do not let the purge water cool in the tub
  6. Rinse the shell thoroughly before filling

If the purge produces an unusually large amount of brown foam, it indicates significant biofilm accumulation — consider a second purge cycle before filling.

Step 5: Fill with Fresh Water Using a Hose Pre-Filter

Never fill directly from a garden hose without a pre-filter if you are in a hard water region or on well water. A hose-end pre-filter ($15–25, reusable for 2–3 fills) removes iron, manganese, and reduces calcium load before water enters the tub — dramatically reducing scale buildup and eliminating the risk of brown water from iron oxidation.

Filling tips:

  • Fill through the filter housing (insert the hose into the filter standpipe) to prime the pump without air locks
  • Fill to the mid-tile line — approximately 2 inches above the jets — rather than to the maximum fill line, to leave room for bathers
  • While filling, check for leaks at all union connections in the equipment compartment

Step 6: Balance Water Chemistry in the Correct Order

The sequence matters. Adjusting in the wrong order means your earlier adjustments are shifted by subsequent ones, and you spend hours chasing the correct number.

Correct balancing order:

1. Total Alkalinity (TA) — Target: 80–120 ppm

Test first. Add sodium bicarbonate to raise TA; use pH decreaser (sodium bisulfate) to lower it. Make TA adjustments first because alkalinity is the pH buffer — if TA is wrong, pH will be unstable regardless of what you add to it.

Allow 1 hour of circulation before retesting.

2. pH — Target: 7.2–7.6

With TA stable, adjust pH using pH increaser (sodium carbonate) to raise or pH decreaser to lower. Fresh fill water is frequently acidic (pH 6.5–7.0) from municipal treatment, or slightly basic in hard water areas. The 7.2–7.4 range is optimal for both sanitizer effectiveness and bather comfort.

3. Calcium Hardness — Target: 200–400 ppm

Test your fill water calcium hardness. Soft water areas (below 150 ppm) need calcium chloride added to protect the shell acrylic and equipment seals from corrosion. Add calcium hardness increaser slowly — calcium chloride is exothermic and can cause cloudiness if added too quickly. Add in 2–3 lb increments, circulate 30 minutes, retest.

Hard water areas (above 400 ppm) cannot lower calcium hardness chemically — partial drain-and-dilute with softer water or a hose pre-filter at the next fill is the only solution.

4. Sanitizer

Add your initial sanitizer dose:

  • Chlorine: 3–5 ppm free chlorine using dichlor granules — add directly to water with jets running
  • Bromine: Add a sodium bromide starter dose (per label for your tub size), then activate with a non-chlorine oxidizer or a small chlorine shock dose

Do not add sanitizer before balancing TA and pH — low pH causes chlorine to off-gas rapidly; high pH makes chlorine almost entirely ineffective regardless of how much you add.

5. Initial Shock

Once the sanitizer baseline is established and the tub has been circulating for at least an hour, shock with a non-chlorine oxidizer (MPS, 2–4 oz per 500 gallons). Non-chlorine shock oxidizes organic contaminants, activates bromine, and does not add to CYA load (unlike dichlor).

Wait 15–30 minutes post-shock before testing sanitizer levels again, as MPS temporarily depresses the chlorine test reading.

Step 7: Heat and Final Readiness Check

With water balanced and sanitizer established, turn on heating. Heat-up time varies:

While the tub heats, retest chemistry at 104°F — pH rises slightly as water heats (this is normal; water's pH increases approximately 0.2–0.3 points per 20°F increase). Adjust down if needed.

24-hour recheck: Test again the morning after the initial fill and balance. This is the most important test — the overnight circulation reveals how stable the chemistry is. Normal drift is within ±0.2 pH and ±5 ppm TA. Larger swings suggest more adjustment is needed before the tub is ready for regular use.

What If Your Hot Tub Ran All Winter?

If you kept your hot tub running continuously through winter rather than fully winterizing it, the process is simpler but you still cannot skip the water change.

Continuous operation accumulates total dissolved solids (TDS) every week. By spring, a tub that has run since October has 5–6 months of accumulated dissolved solids from chemicals, body oils, and evaporation concentration. High TDS degrades every aspect of water quality — chemical effectiveness, clarity, bather comfort — and cannot be corrected chemically.

For continuously-run tubs, do:

  1. Skip the electrical reconnection step (everything is already connected)
  2. Run a pipe purge product through the existing water before draining — this is still important even in a running tub, as biofilm persists on pipe walls despite active chlorine
  3. Drain and refill completely
  4. Re-balance water chemistry using the correct sequence above
  5. Do not skip this process just because the water "looks fine" — high TDS water can look clear while providing very little chemical protection

Common Spring Opening Mistakes

Skipping the inspection: The #1 most expensive mistake. Equipment damage caught during inspection costs $200–600 to repair with the part on order. The same damage caught after you've turned the system on at full pressure can escalate to $1,000+ from secondary failures.

Adding chemicals in the wrong order: Adjusting sanitizer before balancing pH makes the sanitizer significantly less effective. Adding calcium hardness before adjusting TA causes precipitation and persistent cloudiness. Always: TA → pH → CH → sanitizer → shock.

Not doing a pipe purge: Filling over winter biofilm guarantees you'll fight cloudy, high-sanitizer-demand water for weeks before the biofilm finally sloughs enough to be filtered out. The 20-minute purge before filling prevents this entirely.

Shocking with dichlor for the first shock: Dichlor adds cyanuric acid (CYA) to the water with every dose. A single spring shock is manageable, but if CYA builds above 50 ppm over the season, it begins inhibiting chlorine effectiveness. Use non-chlorine MPS shock for routine shocks; save dichlor for raising the sanitizer baseline.

Testing with test strips only: Test strips are adequate for weekly maintenance checks but not for the spring balance sequence — strip reagents degrade over winter and give false readings, and strip color comparison is too imprecise for the initial TA and calcium hardness calibration. Use a liquid reagent test kit for the spring opening.

Running the tub before chemistry is balanced: Hot water accelerates every chemical reaction. An unbalanced pH in hot water corrodes equipment and irritates bathers far more aggressively than the same imbalance in cold water. Balance first, heat second.

  • 3× per week minimum: Test free sanitizer and pH; adjust as needed
  • Weekly: Rinse filter cartridge under running water
  • Monthly: Test total alkalinity and calcium hardness; clean filter thoroughly with filter cleaning solution; add enzyme clarifier dose
  • Quarterly: Full deep clean — pipe purge, complete water change, filter inspection for replacement
