By the time you can see or smell a problem, the underlying chemistry has usually been off for days, creating cascading imbalances that take multiple adjustment cycles to resolve.

The Logic Behind the Schedule

Hot tub chemistry degrades on three timescales:

Daily–weekly: Sanitizer is consumed by bathers, sunlight (in outdoor tubs), and organic matter. pH drifts upward as aeration outgasses CO₂. Chloramines accumulate from nitrogen compounds in sweat and personal care products.

Monthly: Filter media loads up with body oils and scale deposits that reduce flow and trap nutrients for bacteria. Calcium and total dissolved solids gradually climb.

Quarterly: Total dissolved solids (TDS) accumulate to the point where the water becomes chemically "saturated" — it can no longer hold chemical adjustments in place. A full water change resets the slate.

Match your tasks to these timescales and you prevent problems before they start.


Weekly Chemical Routine

Weekly tasks are the backbone of water care. They take 10–15 minutes and prevent every downstream problem.

Test Water 2–3 Times Per Week

Test pH, free chlorine (or bromine), and total alkalinity at minimum. If you have a liquid drop test kit, use it weekly; test strips are acceptable for the other sessions. Record your readings — patterns (pH always high by day 5, sanitizer always low on Fridays after weekend use) let you dose proactively rather than reactively.

Target ranges to maintain:

  • Free chlorine: 3–5 ppm (bromine: 3–6 ppm)
  • pH: 7.4–7.6
  • Total alkalinity: 80–120 ppm
  • Calcium hardness: 150–250 ppm (check monthly; adjust at startup or water change)

Top Up Sanitizer

After testing, add enough granular dichlor (chlorine) or bromine to bring free sanitizer back to 3–5 ppm. For a 400-gallon tub that's dropped to 1 ppm, 1 teaspoon of dichlor adds roughly 2 ppm. Pre-dissolve granules in a bucket of warm spa water and add with the jets running.

Adjust pH and Alkalinity If Needed

If pH is above 7.6, add dry acid (sodium bisulfate). If below 7.2, add pH increaser (sodium carbonate, also called soda ash). Add in small increments — 1 teaspoon at a time for a 400-gallon tub — wait 15 minutes, then retest. Large adjustments made too quickly overshoot the target and require a correction in the opposite direction.

If total alkalinity is outside 80–120 ppm, adjust it first — alkalinity buffers pH, so fixing alkalinity stabilizes pH and often makes pH self-correct.

Weekly Shock

Add an oxidizing shock weekly regardless of bather load — this is the single highest-impact step many owners skip. Shock breaks down chloramines (combined chlorine compounds that cause irritation and odor) and oxidizes organic compounds that accumulate even in clean-looking water.

For maintenance shock: Use non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate), 1–2 oz per 300 gallons. Run jets for 15 minutes with the cover off. You can soak 15–20 minutes after treatment.

For post-heavy-use shock: Use chlorine shock (sodium dichlor) when the tub sees more than 4 people, or after guests. Wait until free chlorine drops below 5 ppm before soaking.

Always shock with the cover off — the outgassing is part of the treatment.


Monthly Chemical Tasks

Monthly tasks extend what the weekly routine can't address: filter loading, chemical drift over a full month of use, and inventory management.

Filter Chemical Soak

Rinsing filters with a garden hose removes visible debris. It does not remove body oils, sunscreen, or mineral scale — those require a chemical soak. Once a month, pull your filters and soak overnight in a commercial filter cleaner solution diluted per the label. Rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.

Most owners who report cloudy water that "doesn't respond to chemicals" are running chemically-fouled filters. The oils coating the filter media act as a nutrient source for bacteria and reduce the filter's effective pore size, reducing flow and stressing the pump. Monthly, test all four parameters — free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, and calcium hardness — with a liquid drop test kit rather than strips. Chemical Inventory Audit

Check your chemical stock once a month and reorder anything that's running low. Running out of a specific chemical mid-adjustment is the most common reason owners improvise with the wrong product. Keep on hand:

  • Chlorine sanitizer (dichlor granules) or bromine
  • pH increaser (soda ash)
  • pH decreaser (dry acid / sodium bisulfate)
  • Alkalinity increaser (sodium bicarbonate)
  • Non-chlorine shock (MPS)
  • Chlorine shock (dichlor or calcium hypochlorite)

Document a Baseline Reading

Once a month, record a full set of readings with the date. This monthly snapshot is invaluable when diagnosing persistent problems — it shows whether a parameter has been drifting slowly or shifted suddenly.


Quarterly Chemical Tasks

Every 3–4 months, three compounding factors converge and require a water change: total dissolved solids (TDS), biofilm potential, and chemical saturation.

TDS Test and Water Change Evaluation

Total dissolved solids accumulate from every chemical addition, every bather, every evaporation cycle. They don't evaporate when water does — topping off with fresh water adds new dissolved minerals but doesn't remove the accumulated TDS. When TDS exceeds 1,500 ppm (or 1,500 ppm above tap water baseline), the water is chemically saturated: chemical adjustments don't hold because there's no more "room" in the solution.

A digital TDS meter ($15–$25 on Amazon) gives you a definitive reading. If TDS is over 1,500 ppm, it's time to drain and refill regardless of where you are in the calendar.

Biofilm Line Purge (Before the Drain)

Before each quarterly drain, run a biofilm purge product (brands include Ahh-Some, Swirl Away, or similar) through the plumbing lines while the tub is still full. Biofilm — the slippery coating that bacteria grow on inside pipes — doesn't drain out with the water. Running a purge product loosens it, causes it to break off and float to the surface, then drains out with the water change.

Add the purge product, run the jets on high for 30–60 minutes (you'll see foam and debris on the surface — this is normal and desirable), then drain. Full Drain, Clean, and Refill

With the tub drained after the purge:

  1. Wipe down the shell with a diluted white vinegar solution or spa surface cleaner — not household cleaners, which leave surfactant residue.

  3. Inspect jets, seals, and unions for visible deterioration or mineral scale.
  4. Refill with fresh water.

Once a year, go beyond routine maintenance to evaluate the chemical system itself.

Test Equipment Calibration Check

Liquid drop test kits expire — the reagents degrade and give increasingly inaccurate readings. Once a year, replace your test kit reagents or the full kit. If you use a digital tester, calibrate it against fresh calibration solution. Testing with expired or uncalibrated equipment is worse than not testing at all: it creates false confidence.

Descale the Heater Element

Calcium scale accumulates on the heater element even with good calcium hardness management. Once a year, inspect the element visually (white crusty deposits indicate scale) and treat with a scale remover product added to the water per label instructions. Review Your Chemical Products

Chemical products have shelf lives. Chlorine granules stored in a warm, humid environment can lose potency by 20–30% within a year. Once annually, check manufacturing dates on bottles and discard any products that are more than 12–18 months old. Store replacements in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and separate from each other — some chemical combinations can react if stored in close proximity.

Annual Equipment Inspection

Seasonal Adjustments

The calendar schedule above assumes average use in moderate climate conditions. Two seasonal factors shift your chemical demands.

Summer: Higher Demand, UV Degradation

In summer, two factors spike your chemical consumption:

UV degradation: Direct sunlight destroys free chlorine rapidly. An outdoor tub with no cover during daylight can lose 50–90% of its free chlorine in a few hours. Use a stabilizer (cyanuric acid, 30–50 ppm) to protect chlorine from UV breakdown, and keep the cover on during non-use periods. Bromine is less UV-sensitive but still benefits from a cover.

Bather load: Summer use typically increases in frequency and party-size. Test more often (daily during heavy use weeks), shock after every high-bather-count session, and reduce your drain interval by 2–4 weeks if use is significantly above average.

Winter: Chemistry Stagnation and Scaling Risk

In winter, the opposite problem emerges:

Low use, stagnant chemistry: If the tub goes unused for a week or more, sanitizer can drop to zero while bacteria multiply undisturbed. Check levels at least twice weekly even during non-use periods, and add a maintenance dose of sanitizer and a weekly shock dose to keep the water safe for re-entry.

Scaling risk increases in cold weather: Calcium hardness is temperature-sensitive — colder water holds less calcium in solution, so the same calcium hardness reading you maintained in summer is more likely to precipitate as scale in winter. Keep calcium hardness toward the lower end of the target range (150–200 ppm) during cold months.

Freeze protection: If temperatures drop below 32°F and you're not using the tub, keep it powered on and set to at least 95°F with the circulation pump running. The water movement prevents freeze damage better than any chemical treatment.
