How to Read Hot Tub Test Strips: Color Chart Guide

You pull a test strip out of your hot tub, hold it up to the bottle, and stare at two colors that look almost identical. Is the chlorine pad green-yellow, or just yellow? Is the pH mid-blue, or leaning toward the dark blue end of the scale? If this sounds familiar, you're not alone — reading test strips is the most common skill gap for new hot tub owners, and it trips up experienced owners too when lighting is bad or strips are old.

This guide covers every pad on a standard 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 test strip: what it measures, what the color range actually means in plain terms, what "normal" looks like, and the specific actions to take when a reading is off.

The Right Technique First

Before the chemistry matters, the technique matters more. Getting an accurate reading depends on five things:

1. Fresh water sample, mid-tub depth. Don't test directly at the water surface — evaporation and sunlight create a chemical gradient. Reach your hand 12–18 inches below the surface.

2. Dip, don't swirl. Submerge the entire strip for 15–20 seconds. Hold it still underwater — don't wave it around. Agitation exposes the pads to more chemical contact than they're calibrated for.

3. Pull straight out, hold horizontal. Remove the strip without shaking off excess water. Immediately hold it horizontally (pads facing up) so the water doesn't run between pads and cross-contaminate the readings.

4. Wait the full 15 seconds before reading. The color change reaction takes time. Reading immediately gives inaccurate results. Most brands say 15–30 seconds — check your bottle.

5. Read in natural daylight. Indoor incandescent and LED lighting distort color perception enough to cause misreadings, particularly for pH (which spans a blue-to-yellow range that's sensitive to warm vs. cool light).

After reading, discard the strip. Never re-use or compare against a second reading from the same strip.


What Each Pad Measures

Chlorine (Free and Total) — The Most Important Pad

What it measures: Free chlorine is the active sanitizer available to kill bacteria and oxidize contaminants. Total chlorine includes both free chlorine and combined chlorine (chloramines — the used-up form that causes irritation and odor).

Target range: Free chlorine 3–5 ppm for hot tubs. (Pools use 1–3 ppm, but hot tub temperatures and smaller volumes demand a higher residual.)

Color range:

  • White or near-white → 0 ppm (dangerously low — no sanitizer)
  • Very light pink → 0.5–1 ppm (low, add chlorine)
  • Light pink → 1–2 ppm (low for hot tubs, fine for pools)
  • Medium pink → 3–5 ppm (ideal for hot tubs)
  • Dark pink or bright magenta → 5–10 ppm (elevated, don't enter until it drops to 5)
  • Strip turns white or bleaches out completely → above 10 ppm (very high — ventilate and wait)

Key distinction: If your strip has two chlorine pads (free and total), compare them. If total chlorine is significantly higher than free chlorine — say, total reads 3 ppm but free reads 1 ppm — you have 2 ppm of combined chlorine (chloramines). This means your water is chemically exhausted even if "some" chlorine remains. Shock the tub to break down the chloramines before re-entering.

If chlorine reads zero: Add chlorine and wait the dissolution time before testing again (typically 30 minutes for granules, 1–2 hours for tablets dissolving from a floater).


pH — The Balance Pad

What it measures: The hydrogen ion concentration in your water — how acidic or alkaline it is. pH affects how effective chlorine is: at pH 8.0, chlorine is only about 20% active. At pH 7.2, it's about 70% active. Getting pH right amplifies the effectiveness of every other chemical.

Target range: 7.4–7.6 (slightly alkaline)

Color range (most brands use a yellow-to-blue or yellow-to-green-blue spectrum):

  • Bright yellow → below 7.0 (very acidic — corrosive to equipment, irritates skin and eyes)
  • Yellow-orange → 7.0–7.2 (low, add pH Up)
  • Yellow-green or gold → 7.2–7.4 (slightly low — borderline acceptable)
  • Mid-green or light olive → 7.4–7.6 (ideal)
  • Blue-green → 7.6–7.8 (slightly high, monitor)
  • Mid-blue → 7.8–8.0 (high, add pH Down)
  • Dark blue or blue-purple → above 8.0 (very high — chlorine is mostly inactive, scale forms)

Practical tip: pH is the pad most affected by lighting. A pH reading of 7.2 (yellow-green) and 7.4 (light green) look nearly identical under warm indoor light. Take pH readings outside or near a window whenever possible.


Total Alkalinity (TA) — The Buffer Pad

What it measures: The amount of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide compounds in the water. Total alkalinity acts as a buffer for pH — high TA keeps pH stable; low TA causes pH to swing dramatically after each soak or chemical addition.

Target range: 80–120 ppm for chlorine hot tubs; 100–150 ppm for bromine hot tubs

Color range (typically a light-to-dark blue or teal range):

  • White or very light → below 60 ppm (dangerously low — pH will bounce wildly; add sodium bicarbonate)
  • Light blue or pale teal → 60–80 ppm (low, add sodium bicarbonate)
  • Mid-blue or teal → 80–120 ppm (ideal)
  • Dark blue → 120–180 ppm (high — pH will be sluggish to adjust; aerate to lower TA)
  • Very dark blue → above 180 ppm (very high — scale risk, difficult to correct pH)

TA and pH relationship: A large alkalinity correction will raise pH. If you add sodium bicarbonate to raise TA from 60 to 120 ppm, expect pH to rise by 0.1–0.3 units. Always retest pH after a large TA correction before adding pH chemicals.


Total Hardness (Calcium Hardness) — The Scale Pad

Present on 6-in-1 strips; not on 5-in-1 strips.

What it measures: The concentration of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. Low calcium hardness makes water "hungry" — it leaches calcium from your shell, grout, and equipment fittings, causing pitting and etching. High calcium hardness forms scale on heater elements, jets, and shell surfaces.

Target range: 150–250 ppm for hot tubs (slightly wider than pool standards because acrylic shells are more vulnerable to aggressive water)

Color range (typically a light-to-dark red, orange, or purple spectrum):

  • White or very pale → below 100 ppm (very soft — start adding calcium chloride)
  • Light pink or light orange → 100–150 ppm (low, add calcium chloride)
  • Mid-orange or mid-pink → 150–250 ppm (ideal)
  • Dark orange → 250–400 ppm (elevated — partial drain may be needed)
  • Dark red or deep purple → above 400 ppm (very high — dilution required; no chemical removes excess calcium)

If your fill water is soft: Municipalities that draw from rivers, glaciers, or rainfall often supply water below 100 ppm hardness. Start by raising calcium hardness to the target range before your first fill or immediately after a refill, before adding any other chemicals.


Bromine — The Alternative Sanitizer Pad

Some strips have a bromine pad instead of or in addition to a chlorine pad. You'll only find this if you use bromine as your primary sanitizer.

Target range: 3–5 ppm for hot tubs

Color range: Similar to chlorine — light to dark pink or orange. Consult your specific brand's chart, as bromine and chlorine pads can look nearly identical, and using the wrong reference color will give incorrect readings.

Important: If you switched from chlorine to bromine recently, use strips calibrated for bromine. A chlorine test strip will read higher than actual bromine concentration because the chemistry of the dye reaction is different.

For indoor hot tubs, cyanuric acid (pool stabilizer) is irrelevant — only outdoor pools that receive direct UV exposure need stabilizer. If your strip includes a cyanuric acid pad and you have an indoor tub, ignore it.

The additional calcium hardness pad on a 6-in-1 strip is worth the small cost premium for most hot tub owners. Calcium hardness affects equipment life more than it affects water appearance — problems develop silently over months, making monthly monitoring valuable.


Reading the Strip Correctly: Step-by-Step

  1. Wait at least 30 minutes after adding any chemical, running jets, or opening the cover before testing. Chemical distribution needs time.
  2. Collect water at elbow depth (about 12 inches below the surface) with your hand or a clean cup.
  3. Dip the strip fully submerged for 15–20 seconds. Do not wave or move it.
  4. Remove straight up and immediately hold horizontal. Do not shake.
  5. Wait 15 seconds. Set a timer — most people read too early.
  6. Take the bottle outside or to a window. Hold the strip directly next to each color block on the chart. Don't hold the strip under the bottle's label — match against the printed blocks, one pad at a time.
  7. Read each pad independently. Don't let the color of adjacent pads influence your interpretation.
  8. Record results. A simple notebook or phone note with date, time, and all readings lets you track trends — a rising TA or slowly dropping pH tells you more than a single reading.
  9. Act on readings in priority order: sanitizer first, then pH, then TA, then calcium hardness. Chlorine is the immediate safety concern; others are medium-term maintenance.

Why Strip Results Are Sometimes Wrong

Expired strips. Test strips absorb moisture from the air, which degrades the reactive pads. Check the expiration date on the bottle and replace strips annually even if unused. Strips that have been exposed to humidity — a strip tube left open in a humid bathroom — can go bad within months.

Color blindness. Red-green color blindness (affecting about 8% of men) makes pH and chlorine pads difficult to interpret accurately. Digital test kit readers (such as AquaChek TruTest) eliminate this variable entirely by reading the strip electronically.

Wrong strip for your sanitizer. Chlorine strips won't accurately measure bromine levels. Make sure your strips match your sanitizer type.

Testing too soon after adding chemicals. Adding chemicals and immediately retesting almost always shows abnormal readings because the chemicals haven't distributed evenly yet.

Water on the hands. If you've been in the tub and test with wet hands, the dilution on your fingers can affect the strip reading. Dry your hands first, or use a dedicated clean cup to collect the sample.


When Test Strips Aren't Enough

Test strips are excellent for routine weekly monitoring, but they have limits:

  • Accuracy range: Test strips are accurate to within 10–20% at best. A strip reading of 3 ppm chlorine could mean actual chlorine between 2.4 and 3.6 ppm. This is fine for maintenance, but not precise enough for troubleshooting.
  • Can't detect all problems: Test strips don't measure metals (iron, copper, manganese), phosphates, or cyanuric acid accurately enough for most troubleshooting purposes.
  • Chemistry crises need a liquid test kit or digital reader. If your water is persistently cloudy, discolored, or you can't get chemistry stable despite correct strip readings, bring a water sample to a pool store for professional testing. How to Fix Common Strip Readings

Chlorine too low (strip shows pale pink or white): Add chlorine granules (sodium dichloro or trichloro) at the label-recommended dose for your tub volume. Granules work fastest — within 30 minutes. Retest before entering.

Chlorine too high (strip is very dark pink or bleaches out): Wait. Chlorine dissipates on its own through heat and agitation. Run the jets with the cover off for 30–60 minutes. Retest every 30 minutes.

pH low (strip is yellow or yellow-orange): Add pH Up (sodium carbonate / soda ash). Start with half the recommended dose — soda ash raises pH quickly and it's easy to overshoot. Retest after 30 minutes.

Total alkalinity low (strip is white or very pale): Add sodium bicarbonate (baking soda or pool-grade alkalinity increaser — same compound). Add in 30 ppm increments with 4 hours between additions. Large single additions cause a pH spike that's hard to control.

Building a Testing Habit

The most effective testing routine for most hot tub owners:

  • Before every soak: Quick free chlorine check (takes 30 seconds, one strip). If the pad reads pale or white, add chlorine and wait 30 minutes before entering.
  • Weekly: Full 5-in-1 or 6-in-1 test. Record all results. Adjust as needed.
  • After heavy use (parties, multiple soakers): Full test within 24 hours. Bather load consumes chlorine and introduces organic matter — water can turn from balanced to problematic in a single session.
  • After top-offs or partial drains: Full test immediately after refilling. New water changes all parameters.
